Joe Theismann attended and played college football for the University of Notre Dame. In 1969, Theismann led the Irish to a number five ranking and their first bowl appearance in 45 years. The next year, the Irish had a 10–1 record, a number two ranking, and won against Texas in the 1971 Cotton Bowl Classic, 24–11. Theisman was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003. Ara Parseghian served as head coach for three teams, most notably the University of Notre Dame team from 1964–1974.
